Over the past 30+ years, Newman Plumbing has had the pleasure of servicing many customers in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, some of which we have helped more than once. This is in part due to our Newman Plumbing stickers that we place on old appliances so that customers have an easy point of reference to get back in touch with us when their next service is due. Recently we were called out to an oddly familiar residence in Templestowe, only to discover that there was a Newman Plumbing sticker on the hot water unit that must have been around 20 years... Most of us here in Melbourne use a heating unit day in, day out every winter, without issue. However, when we place such high demand on our unit every day, even several times a day, over a number of years – this can result in wear and tear as the unit ages, increasing its stress load, resulting in less efficiency and reliability. This was exactly the case for a customer we recently attended to in Mont Albert North. They called us here at Newman Plumbing, as they were experiencing problems with their gas ducted heating unit.  The gas-ducted heater had... View Article

Carbon Monoxide – A Silent Killer

The cold Melbourne winter has arrived, and the heaters are being turned on! We are snuggling up with our families on lounge suites and enjoying the warmth our heaters exude. Everybody is safe and warm – but how safe are we really? Could your family be vulnerable to a silent killer? If your heater happens to run on gas, like many household heaters are, then your family could be vulnerable. When a gas appliance is working properly, with the correct oxygen mix, the burnt gas turns into water vapour (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Already present naturally in the atmosphere, neither... Beware of Your Bathroom! The Room with the Biggest Risk for Hot Water Scalds and Burns Believe it or not, the bathroom is one of the most hazardous rooms in the house for babies, young children and the elderly. Why? Because this is where scalds and hot water burns can occur, as well as falls and drowning. To help reduce some of the risks associated with this, it is vital that new houses and where appropriate, renovations, should adhere to hot water temperatures of no more than 50 degrees at the basin, bath and shower. The only exceptions to this... View Article

We were asked the other day by a customer in Balwyn about the servicing of gas appliances and the dangers of Carbon Monoxide {CO} poisoning. So we thought it was important to share some of the information involved. Within a gas appliance, the gas is regulated and passes through a fine injector in order to allow the correct proportion of gas and air to mix within the combustion chamber where the fuel is burned. The gas appliance has many safety measures to ensure that gas will not flow through the appliance until it is required and that it can be burned safely. When... View Article

We recently cleared stormwater drains for a customer in Camberwell. The home was experiencing flooding under the house every time there was a decent rain. Unlike clearing a sewer drain, clearing a blocked stormwater drain can be quite extensive and costly as the drains can be blocked for quite some time before an owner notices the damage occurring and takes action. Our new customer was looking for a plumber in Camberwell and contacted Newman Plumbing. We advised our new customer of the problems and costs involved before commencing. It was quite a task as the drains had been blocked for some time. We were finally able to clear the stormwater... View Article

Trying to keep warm this winter ! For a warm home it’s essential to keep your heating appliances serviced and maintained. The frequency of cleaning the heater will depend on local conditions, so regular inspection should be performed. To ensure that your heater continues to operate at peak efficiency, it should be serviced at two year intervals by a licensed gasfitter. This service of the heating unit will include all maintenance and adjustments to components such as burners, ignition system, fan assembly and heat exchanger. If a return air filter in the return air grille is fitted regular cleaning and checking... View Article

Recently we were called out to a home in Surrey Hills to service an internal hot water unit that had been installed in a garage. It was to our great concern that the lawn mower and a can of fuel were stored nearby. There are lots of safety issues with hot water units that need to be recognised. Not only for the safety of the installation but also for servicing and efficient operation of the hot water unit.  The position of the hot water service installed at your home should be close to the most frequently used outlet and its position chosen with safety...
