Vermont the suburb is bordered by Mitcham to the north, Nunawading and Forest Hill to the west, Vermont South to the south and Wantirna and Ringwood to the east.

The name of this mainly residential suburb, French for “green hill”, was possibly suggested by the government botanist Ferdinand von Mueller. Wood-cutters arrived in the 1850s but orchards and small farms predominated until the 1950s. A school, church, mechanics institute, public hall, and post office-cum-general store met the needs of the small community until the 1910s. A bus service between Vermont and Mitcham started in1923 and Wunderlich Tileworks established a factory in 1932, lifting the population to just over 700 in 1933. New civic groups, schools, churches and businesses flourished during the postwar housing boom, and in later decades of the century its population aged and decreased significantly.

The suburb of Vermont is the location of the Vermont Volunteers Roll of Honour for the First World War. The honour board used to hang in the former Mechanics Institute Hall, which was on the site now occupied by the Scout Hall. Some of the names listed are also included on the Mitcham and Blackburn war memorials. Vermont is located 21km east of Melbourne with the nearest railway station being Mitcham railway station, located 2km north of Vermont and Heatherdale station which is located 1.4km north of Vermont from Canterbury Road.

One of the Melbourne’s major arterials, Canterbury Road, passes through the centre of Vermont, running east to west. It is intersected by Mitcham and Boronia Roads which run north and south-east respectively.
