Surrey Hills is a suburb shared by the Cities of Camberwell and Box Hill. The earlier names of these two cities were: Boroondara, derived from aboriginal Burroodarrah- a shady or dark place, and Nunawading- Numphawading- a ceremonial ground or battlefield.

With the growth of Melbourne in the late 19th century there was an increased demand for timber for building and for fuel. The wooded slopes were being striped by timber cutters of the original woodland cover of red gum, casuarina, banksia and wattle.

The first land purchase was in 1841 when Elgar, an East Indian merchant, took up 5,120 acres bounded by the present Elgar, Canterbury, and Burke Roads and the Koonung Creek. Early residents of Surrey Hills were wood carters, farmers and fruit growers.

An 1853 survey map of the Parish of Nunawading shows the only habitation in Surrey Hills as the farmhouse of Dennis Delany, together with three other buildings, on the eastern bank of an unnamed creek near the present Broughton Road/Pine Street corner.

Canterbury Road in the 1840-50s was Lower Nunawading Road, in 1856 Delany’s Road {named after his hotel on the road}, but renamed in 1873 for the then retiring Governor of Victoria, Viscount Canterbury. Boundary Road, now Warrigal Road, separated the two shires. The trip to Melbourne took two to three days by saddleback, dray or bullock wagon. Large acres were sold from Crown Lands in 1853; some farms were developed, some were held for future sale. The District Roads Boards were formed in 1854 and they planned the roads and collected tolls at various toll-gates set up to help pay for road maintenance. However the drivers of drays frequently evaded the gates and the cost of manning them often exceeded the tolls collected. They were abolished in 1878.

In about 1860 part of the land in Elgar’s Special survey was released in blocks of approximately 500 feet by 1500 feet and many well-to-do businessmen and other colonists became purchases. Whitehorse Road was the first main road to Lilydale and the gold-diggings while Delany’s Road was still a Bullock track Surry Mont was the name of a property situated north of Whitehorse Road, between Balwyn and Union Roads, owned in 1860 by James Henty. The name Surrey Hills was used by John H Knipe in his subdivision of 30 Acres bounded on the north by Mont Albert Road and on the East by Union Road. The Land Boom of the 1880s saw the subdivision of most of these rural properties.
