Donvale post office opened on 16 September 1929. A postal district since 1926, Donvale was until 1994 in the City of Doncaster and Templestowe. The name Donvale said to be a blend of Doncaster and Springvale, a contraction of the names of the roads on its western boundary. Until the middle of the 20th century the district was predominantly a fruit-growing area.

Suburbanisation followed increased motor car ownership and the availability of land after orchard subdivision from the 1950s. By the end of the 20th century Donvale was an affluent residential suburb featuring Whitefriars Carmelite Monastery, Donvale Sports Complex, Donvale Retirement Village, Mullum Mullum Creek Linear Park, and educational institutions such as Donvale Christian College, Montessori Early Education Centre, and a campus of Carey Baptist Grammer School.

Donvale has an indoor sports centre with a gymnasium, complete with a sprung floor and a foam pit. The centre also has two basketball courts which are played on every Saturday by children in the Doncaster District Primary School Basketball Association.

Donvale is a suburb 20 kms east of Melbourne’s business district.
