Situated in the rolling hills between Camberwell and Balwyn, this area was part of Elgar’s Special survey of 1841. Deepdene railway station opened in 1890, named after the local residence of D.C. Askew. Bounded by Burke Road, Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert Road and Balwyn Road, Deepdene includes several tranquil parks as well as some of the most salubrious interwar housing and characteristic street tree plantings of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Deepdene lay on the Outer Circle railway and a spur line survived between Deepdene and East Camberwell until 1927, the last suburban steam train service in Melbourne{the “Deepdene Dasher”}. Deepdene was, after 1914, the terminus of the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust’s electrified line. When electric trams subsequently extended along Whitehorse Road, this corner of the City of Camberwell became a prized site for the villas of Melbourne’s rising professional class.
The suburb developed in the post World War ll boom and was populated by a mixture of professional and working class families. The initial boom occurred along the Whitehorse Road tramline, which defined the working class Deepdene factory {such as the Wade handbags and the Jarvis-Walker fishing rod factories}, shop strip and the Balwyn shops around the intersection with Burke Road. With Deepdene State School at its western extreme, it drew a mixed student population that contrasted with the student population of Balwyn High School located in the area that became known as North Balwyn, which was populated later than the rest of the suburb.
Apart from the significant religious establishments of the suburb, local almost village churches sprang up with the boom of young people post war, one example of which was the Deepdene Methodist Church. Now defunct, the church was a thriving focus for young people’s fellowship, a scout troop, fundraising as well as mothers and other groups that defined a viable neighbourhood.
Deepdene is just 10 km from the cities business district and is surrounded by Balwyn, Canterbury, Hawthorn East, Kew, Kew East, Balwyn North, and Mont Albert North.
