Camberwell is one of Melbourne’s most populous suburbs. A proclaimed city itself, it hills of red-tiled houses and tree-lined streets hold more than ninety thousand people. It embraces not only the suburb of Camberwell but all those suburbs spilling along 250 miles of street from North Balwyn and Surrey Hill to Alamein and Glen Iris. The thirteen square miles of this city are defined on two sides by arterial roads and on two sides by creeks that dawdle down green flats to the Yarra River. It is all hill and valley, and from the hills you see the spires and massed storeys of Melbourne, the water of the bay, and the horseshoe of blue ranges that etch the horizon from east to west.

These pleasant heights made Camberwell a favoured retreat for wealthy merchants long before Melbourne generated outer suburbs. The soil nourished vineyards and wheat-fields, cow pastures and market –gardens; and axemen made clearings in an age when the whole metropolis had fewer people than Camberwell has today. Take the tram ride through Camberwell crossing the Yarra to Camberwell Road.

Progressing to the Camberwell junction-a very busy five way intersection and the main shopping area of Camberwell replete with supermarkets, a fresh fruit, vegetable, fish and meat market and shops of every description-here the line is once again intersected by another tram route, No72 from Deepdene to Melbourne University via Burke and Malvern roads. As well, the line to East Burwood branches off here to the south-east.

Riversdale Road continues uphill and rollercoasters its way past pleasant houses, many of which are hidden behind plantings of trees and shrubs. The route races downhill to cross the railway line to Alamein, past a pretty park call Fordham Gardens on the right, then uphill again to the bluestone church of St Dominic’s on the right and Siena College for girls on the left. Highfield Park follows on the left at Highfield Road.

The tram continues, up and down to Warrigal Road, on the south-east corner of which the main entrance to Wattle Park is situated. This park is under the jurisdiction of Parks Victoria, but originally was founded by the Metropolitan Tramways Board. It is full of wattle trees as betokens its name, and contains in its expanse a fine and hilly public golf course, an old tram for the benefit of children, a good kiosk for meals and light refreshments, and a bicycle path around the perimeter. In summer months the band of tramways board gives Sunday afternoon concerts in its environs. The line ends at Elgar Road and the boundary of Wattle Park.
